Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a 15-acre garden right on Sarasota Bay, and it happens to be the only botanical garden in the world dedicated to the display and study of epiphytic orchids, bromeliads, and other tropical plants — a fact that sounds academic until you’re standing under a banyan canopy wondering how a tree got that big.
The gardens sit on the former home of Marie and William Selby, and the historic Christy Payne Mansion is still part of the grounds. Give yourself at least two hours to wander the paths, koi ponds, and bayfront views — it’s not a rushed kind of place, and that’s the appeal.
As a Smithsonian affiliate, the plant collections are genuinely world-class, but it never feels stuffy. It’s shaded, quiet, and on a hot Sarasota afternoon it’s one of the more comfortable outdoor things to do in the city. It pairs naturally with a downtown Sarasota day, since it’s just minutes from the bayfront and Main Street. Visit in the morning during peak season for cooler, quieter walking conditions.
