Not every Sarasota day needs to revolve around the beach, and Myakka River State Park is the clearest proof of that. One of Florida’s oldest and largest state parks, it’s a genuinely wild contrast to the coastal scene most visitors expect — wetlands, prairie, hammock forest, and a river home to one of the largest alligator populations in the state.
The signature experience is the canopy walkway, a suspension bridge roughly 25 feet up in the oak and pine canopy, followed by an observation tower with sweeping treetop views. With more time, airboat tours across the lake are a good way to spot alligators safely, and there are miles of trails for hiking, biking, and canoe or kayak rentals for exploring the river directly.
Go in the morning: the heat builds fast in the open prairie, and wildlife is more active earlier in the day. Bring water, sun protection, and bug spray — this is genuine backcountry. It’s about 45 minutes from Magnolia House, and it’s the best day trip for guests who want to see a different, wilder side of Florida.
